They don't pay attention, unless you start name calling and respond in kind. But they are conditioned to respond emotionally without thinking.
They win debates not because they're right, but because they use the most inflammatory rhetoric to guide the conversation back to putting us on the defensive, trying answer with logic and facts.
They can ignore the facts, dismiss witnesses galore out of hand, and silence any input from the opposition, but what they can't do is justify their untenable positions.
